pancake party

nothing like breakfast for dinner :) we should do this more often! found out that S doesn't only take the most awesome photographs but he's not too shabby a pancake chef either. granted, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to flip these babies. great pancakes and better company.

that time of year

when everything turns white.
it's snowing again :)
and we went skating at dusk.

will post proper after pancake dinner at J's and cafe opera with the cool gang.

the beginning of a love affair

it's official, i'm in love with paris and she's usurped london as my second favourite city. as you might imagine, this has caused a semi-pseudo-matrimonial problem because i now want to live in paris at some point while my anglophile lover is determined to return to his english roots.

was delighted when M & F invited me to spend some time in paris with them and their boys. they were perfect hosts and i've never felt more welcome. it's hard to believe that we last met about seven years ago! they've a lovely apartment along the leafy victor hugo with a stunning view of the rooftops of paris (came with the penthouse i guess) and a panoramic view of the eiffel tower. if i wasn't as enamoured with the darn tower as i already am, it might've been an overdose but i never tired of the beautiful lights at night. we spent the whole of sunday together, beginning with a boulangerie-fresh breakfast and then drove around paris in the spitting rain. went to isle st. louis, saw the notre dame and then had berthillon ice cream after lunch. oh my word, ice cream like never before. it was amazing and i forgot about the november chill and ate to my heart's content. tea at fouquet's and then japanese dinner. i told you they spoiled me :)

breakfast at laduree on monday and then the adults went to work, leaving me on my own. that's when i snuck off to taillevent and spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around on my own. M was sweet to take the afternoon off and once it was dark the whole family went for a boat ride down the seine followed by dinner at a sexy brasserie near where princess di's flame.

lazy breakfast in on tuesday and then more solo exploring. hopped onto the 63 because it stops outside their house and toured paris on the cheap. enjoyed moseying around on my own, ducking into quaint shops, practising my pigeon french and just breathing in the parisian air. yes, it's not usually fresh but this was after a long november shower so there wasn't a hint of pollution.

one thing that struck me during my time in paris was thank god i've a healthy lifestyle! i can't imagine how awful it'd be to have been a house guest if i was a wild party girl. when you stay with family friends, especially long-time family friends of your mother's, they don't expect you to be a brat. and i'm so glad that i was happy to wake at 8am with them and we'd be back home by 9pm so the boys could sleep by 10. i'd be left to my own devices after coming home and i'd busy myself with a book from their impressive collection. read lots about french history and culture (in english!) and chilled out on their rooftop with a cup of steaming coffee, fresh french pastries and the aforementioned view of the eiffel tower. not quite post-dinner fare but yummy all the same.

as a blessed little beneficiary of such hospitality and generosity, it just makes me want to pay it forward if ever i've the chance. and, of course, to bring them for a blow out meal when they're next in singers.

sublimity is taillevent

(subtitle: please to ask for a shower at a nice two-star establishment)

i'd to do the taillevent thing a little delicately. was in paris on M's invitation and while he and F were sparing no cost to ensure my supreme comfort (oh boy was i spoilt), i most definitely didn't want them to buy me lunch at taillevent too. and, um, i didn't want to invite them to lunch their either because having lunch there alone was already stretching things, if you get what i mean. so i emailed them the moment i knew i'd a brief window of alone time on monday. in fact, i even emailed them in the alternative, asking if i could book tuesday if they were full on monday. they replied asap and after furtively oui-ing into my mobile, i was all set!

monday began on the best possible note with breakfast at laduree before M and F went to work. this gave me 2h to kill along the champs, sacrilegious at it may be to be pacing the champs thinking about my next meal instead of enjoying it for itself. i was way too distracted to take anything in. in paris, you're not supposed to smile apparently, because only retards smile to themselves. ooops, guilty as charged. as i floated down the champs, i'm pretty sure i'd an ear-to-ear grin plastered across my face and i didn't care who judged. breakfast at laduree is enough to send me trippin' but throw in lunch at taillevent and ooohlala an even more potent mix! vaguely remember moseying but really, i was just counting down the minutes to my reservation. although in an attempt to maintain some semblance of detached refinement, i was deliberately 10 minutes late. didn't want to come across as desperate ;) stepping to taillevent was like being transported into another world, cliche as it sounds and the next two hours passed in a dream.

the must've been an entourage of people just inside the door. an elegant greyhaired lady whisked my shopping bag away (never have i been so embarrassed by a gap bag) because carrying plastic bags to lunch just wasn't done. my sorry sac scored it's own hanger (!!!) in the cloakroom hehe and i was escorted into the restaurant unencumbered by tacky reminders of my misspent morning. the maitre'd introduced himself as jerome and i was promptly seated at my table set for one.

i don't know about you but i love lunching alone, pathetic as it sounds. well, only if it's a good meal and this promised to be. i do need to stop doing this lone diner in swanky establishment thing though, tend to do one per city and if the wait staff rotated they'd be onto me in no time! hmm i could even be elevated to an urban legend...

i was seated and the menu presented etc and we'd gotten this far speaking only french, granted, there is a relatively limited dialogue for interaction of this type. but the waiters spoke french to me and i spoke french back and everything was wonderfully french as i let my inner francophile loose. had the set and requested un carafe, s'il vous plait. in love as i am with fine food, i couldn't muster up the courage to spend on drinks too because i actually really like water and only probably ever drink water, or tea. the waiters were so classy they gave my lowly bottle of tap water its individual sterling silver bucket of ice :) and kept my glass religiously topped up. oh and speaking of silver the cutlery was christofle!

ordered and sank deep into the plush cushion and sighed contently. the choux puffs with cheese came and it was so delicate. one of the best things about dining alone is that i got a plate of 6 puffs on a serving plate while i exercised restraint and put those etiquette classes to good use by taking only one at a time, we all knew that they were MINE ALL MINE :) and then the real bread came with butter as good as laduree's.

the amuse bouche was some foamy molecular gastronomy thing infused with truffles. yummy but, well, foamy. am still unable to appreciate molecular gastronomy, it's a load of hot air if you ask me.

crab cake in crab bisque (or so i translate) for the starter and it was perfect. the meat was so fresh and the fibres separated from each other with such ease. the soup was soaked up by the meat as i spooned it into my mouth and this is the part that really impressed me because i'm a big soup fan. when my soup dried up before the crab was done, the waiter unobtrusively and immediately gave me a top of! such attentiveness and oooh, more soup :)

against my conscience, i'd gone with the foie gras for the main. oh come on! i was in france! and um actually i don't have any feelings for geese, i just try to be politically correct now and then. but foie gras! oui oui oui! and this, my friend, was the mother of all foie gras. it was perfection incarnate and if i died right after from coronary heart disease, i'd have been perfectly content. so simple, just one slab of perfectly sauteed foie gras with pear slices and skinned grapes forming little a circle of celebration around it. i probably ate it too fast but i did attempt to slow down at some point. i think.

the cheese course came next and while i'm not partial to the taste of goat cheese they did this one very well with apple and celery on the side to cleanse the palate after each nibble. and there were raisins (?) in the middle too so that took the sting off a little.

dessert was nothing short of delirium-inducing, beer sorbet and nashi (japanese pear!) and other fragile sugary creations that broke in my mouth.

assortment of petit fours, another benefit of dining alone, i get a plate to myself!

it was probably the beer sorbet that made me ask for the shower instead of the ladies, although confusing cabine de douche with salles de bain is a schoolgirl error that only 'a muppet' would make. thankfully the waiter successfully concealed his smirk and escorted me to the ladies instead. guess they're used to patrons needing a post-meal cold shower.

on the whole it was a superb dining experience, i like that the price was all-inclusive, don't you just hate it when all the +++ make you regret not reading the fine print earlier? the wait staff were incredible. poised, unobstrusive yet attentive to a fault. i was very impressed. after i accidentally got sauce on the table, they swiftly put another tablecloth on to cover the offensive spill. and even though i didn't get crumbs all over the place, the waiter still patiently crumbed the imaginary bits of bread away. and they didn't seem to judge at all and were very polite without being obsequious, a hard balance in the service industry because the overeager ones make you feel bad with their enthusiasm. i was very grateful that i come from a school that emphasised etiquette and manners. when other girls were tramping through muddy fields at outward bound school, we were locked in seminar rooms for what they branded 'life skills' so as not to attract the (most undeserved!) taitais-in-training label. a few years on, i'm so glad that i know to dab my lips with a napkin and not swipe, inter alia. through the meal, the one 'rude thing' i did was to text him and my parents nonstop to share the experience with them. after all, what's good food without the people you love, especially when you know they're bigger foodies than you.

good food makes me more homesick than i realise. it's terrible, my stomach runs my life.

SPG*-in-the-making

(when i asked why she'd a thing for angmohs)

"and OBVIOUSLY i have a thing for angmohs, have you SEEN the faces on singaporeans??! oops not talking about the love of your life. but ALL THE OTHER MALES."

so i've warned her to be careful and if she absolutely must, date one who's independently wealthy. because cross-cultural marriage is the surest guarantee for disinheritance. teeheehee. more for me then :)

to my white, male, independently wealthy readers, any takers?

p/s N's already dating a guai lo girlie so projecting 20 years into the future if the status quo and cultural preferences remain, my full-blooded offspring will be the firm favourites and sole heirs.

a perfect day

gorgeous breakfast at laduree, strolling along the champs élysées, leisurely lunch at taillevent, more window-shopping and sight-seeing, cruise down the seine after dark to see the city illuminated, dinner at a sexy brasserie and then laduree macarons and coffee for dessert back home.

had an ear-to-ear grin plastered on my face for most of the day, especially after breakfast and before lunch. there is no greater feeling than having had the most satisfying breakfast yet being to anticipate an even more delicious (if that is even possible!) lunch. plus i am still romancing the bag and the prospect of him coming in 3 days is enough to send me into orbit.

proper taillevent review when i am back in stocks. for now, let's just say that my new goal in life is to live in paris.

you may ride on top

you will see more that way.'

but it was only 10am and a little too early to car surf, IMHO. thus i politely declined and said we'd save car surfing for when the boys were in school, so as not to set a bad example.

took me awhile to realise that she meant for me to ride shotgun. M got it straight away though and was in stitches as she insisted that i rode on top as i even more resolutely said no :)

spent a lazy sunday driving around paris and seeing her architectural wonders. typical november weather i.e. wet and windy but i love blustery anyway so no complaints. we went to isle st. louis and wandered around the narrow streets before going to the notre dame. yummy lunch (steak tartare) and the most divine berthillon sorbet for dessert. back home for a siesta break before braving the throngs of tourist along champs elyseeés. had the best millefeuille ever at fouquet and then chanced upon the LV store where i happened to fall in lust with a bag. how predictable. but i thought about my, um, incredibly financial obligation back home and decided to be prudent. for tonight, at least. i do have 3 more days here...

sushi dinner because i have indulgent hosts and it's an early night because we are going to laduree for breakfast bright and early tomorrow morning :) this is wayyy healthy living because i sleep early and wake early and it is partially because they have young children who need to sleep and i am already so ingratiated to them that i don't want to impose any further.

loving paris

and it has only been 12heures! slept like a baby and woke to croissants, pain au chocolat, OJ and espresso. going to isle st louis soon and will stuff my face with berthillon ice cream! river cruise for dinner and just wandering around with the most atypical french famille ever, in the best possible way. more about them later!

bon journeé!

this just in

i don't know how it happened but i'm accidentally in the guest room of a sprawling penthouse along avenue victor hugo in the 16th. i can see the eiffel tower from the living and dining rooms (panoramic view) and from my bedroom (also quite panoramic). it has flashed once already since i arrived and i will watch it flash again and again until i slowly enter dreamland. i have a huge huge bed and a huge huge room and an en suite bathroom. the kitchen is well-stocked and i've been given carte blanche to raid the fridge and the boys' stash of candy. there is also a nespresso machine that i'd love to cart back to stockholm with me. this is pretty much my idea of heaven, with pain au chocolat for breakfast, freshly baked from the boulangerie around the corner.
and yes i'm a little embarrassed by how big a deal this penthouse is because i thought i was too refined to be this overwhelmed but NAAAARHH who am i trying to kid???
creature comforts aside, my hosts are superlatively wonderful. they are so warm and generous and hospitable and they met me at the shady shades bus terminal and gave me a tour of paris after dark and it felt like i was cinderella or something. from ryanair flight and correspondingly exploitative bus to their palatial crib. M has the most rib-tickling sense of humour and F is sweet yet sassy, if a 40year old lady can be described as such. and they are so obviously in love and it is great to be with them and their beautiful boys who were running around pretending to be davy crockett! really excited and auughhh i don't want my carriage to turn into a pumpkin on tuesday :(

punch friday

and then some.

one of the best things about traditions is how quick they form. over here, at least.

the night began with the third instalment of punch friday at J's and after the last drop dried, we headed over to G's to join the rest of the students-subjected-to-ILS. but this time, it was a cause for celebration! there was a semi-surreal moment as we chanced upon another horde on the lappis lawn and we coalesced to form one big happy blob that descended on G's corridor in glee.

never seen everyone so relaxed, nary a care in the world, as we talked about everything except the taboo (percentage of female swedish parliamentarians, anyone?) and a magnum of bubbly made its rounds as we all toasted to the successful completion of part A and remained in denial that part B begins on monday. unfortunately, i'll be in paris on monday. boohoo :)

need to pack and add to my to-do list. am going to learn french between cityterminalen and skavsta.

bonjour madame, dix pain au chocolat s'il vous plait!

to this
(and for christmas.)

c'est si bon

For Paris, try the following
1) Fat Tire Bike Tours - Their bike tours of Monet's House (or anywhere else actually) and their Segway Tours of Paris are really fun.

2) The Eiffel Tower at night is really pretty - it sparkles every hour on the hour from 10pm. Catch it from a roadside cafe at the Seine end of Avenue George V and have a meal at the same time.

3) The view from the Eiffel Tower is great too. The expensive (but queue-less way) to do it is to book a meal at the Jules Verne Restaurant - they have a private lift. Great food (Alain Ducasse) but not cheap.

4) The Isle St Louis - It's like a small village but in the middle of the river. Get to it by metro or by walking from the Notre Dame. Berthillion Ice Cream shops seem to be particularly numerous here. Yum!

5) If you must do a river ride to see the city from a different perspective, go at night. The boat brings its own floodlights to illuminate the buildings. Cheesy but quite contemplative.

6) Au Pied Du Cochon - 24/7 restaurant in the Les Halles district. Great Onion Soup and the restaurant NEVER closes. The fried pig's feet are overated but a house speciality.

7) Le Entrecote - No choice restaurant. Standard Salad, standard cut of sirloin and dessert, no reservations and be prepared to queue. Beware of imitations.

8) If you're dining on Daddy's (I have chosen to be quite specific about the payee ;-) credit card - Taillevent. OUTSTANDING!!!! Don't worry that it now only has 2 Michelin Stars - it's still better than any restaurant we have here in Singapore.

That should keep you busy for a while.

Have fun,
Your Envious Uncle

i really shouldn't be thinking about it now but the prospect of paris is a lot more intriguing than a four hour exam. so i'm working out the list and re-read an old email which brought a smile to my face. seeing how i'd planned on paris since before even knowing i'd be in stockholm, it's a timely reminder of how well things have worked out. having bypassed the city of lights twice in as many years, i'm glad i'm finally going back for the first time in over a decade. i've foggy memories of counting the number of bridges across the seine, lemon sole at side walk cafes, my first ever gap top at galeries lafayette, baguettes and pork trotters complete with nails.

i wonder what it'll be like this time :)

the misses

it sort of burns on my conscience that, to date, i've missed a grand total of eight weddings this year.

part of me still feels awful for missing my dear, eldest cousin's wedding in may when i was conquering the machu picchu. and there were seven other weddings of relatively close friends. not BFFs but still lovely ladies i'd have liked to have watched float down the aisle. and i just found out that i'm missing two x childhood friends' wedding in december. as in, i've two childhood friends marrying their respective partners (not each other) and hence two more weddings that i won't be around for.

plus there's a prospective wedding next year that i'm hoping won't be during my graduation trip. eeP!

maybe i should stop burning my bridges..

just in case

i turned swedish. good to know she's found a use for extra prints.

land of legends

it's pretty silly but i really really really miss greece, well, the cyclades to be exact. athens and crete are probably at the top of my will-never-ever-return-to-by-choice list. pity i didn't get to go to greece during this half-year hiatus. the timing didn't work out, the cyclades aren't as hot in autumn and i'll be back home by the time next summer rolls round.

it's times like this when the weather's turned cold and the sun's gone on vacation that i wish i was back in picturesque santorini with postcard perfect views that even i can take a semi-decent photo.

and, take me to paradise beach anytime!
talk about crazy fun under the summer sun.
nostalgia nostalgia release me now!

hit list

so here's the plan between now and singers, starting this weekend:

saturday -tuesday paris
friday - saturday milan
saturday - friday sicily sardinia
(a fortnight later)
friday - tuesday berlin
(a fortnight+ later)
friday - sunday st, moritz
sunday - tuesday zurich

and pending flight availability, if i do go only make it home in time for new year's then there'll be a last minute addition post-zurich pre-singers.

life's good :)
